A cruisey Sunday. Nina had her second party for the weekend, which was held at the place where they lived prior to this apartment. It was more of a resort than an apartment, but it faced onto a horrendously busy road and they were daunted by the idea of getting Nina to and from school each morning. This apartment is just a two minute walk from the school, and is right in the centre of things, overlooking houses lived in by Cambodian families. Here it is:
Nanna and 'the girls' in the pool
View from the front window
Lounge room. Jesse with Mae
Some pretty scary stairs. I nearly fell down them on the first day. That would have ruined my holiday!
Who would have thought that Nanna would become an OHS inspector? We bought tape to put in the edges of the otherwise indistinguishable steps
What a wonderful study. Sunlight all day, overlooking the rest of the apartment. This would have sold me.
That said, I can really see the appeal of their previous apartment. Their current apartment has a pool on the roof, but it is not large and is quite deep, probably 150 cm? which means that I can only stand on tippy-toes. It makes a swim with 'the girls' rather anxiety-provoking, for me at least.
The pool at the resort has a children's pool about 70 cm deep, and the shallow end of the big pool would be about 100 cm- much more reassuring. At the back of the resort there is a river with barges moving back and forth.
The large building with the spires is the Ministry for the Interior. A huge building.
The river along the back. Bit difficult to see
Would I have moved? Yes, probably, despite my enjoyment of the pool and the gardens in such a chaotic, busy city. Being able to walk to school is great, and starting the day with all that traffic would be overwhelming. This one is certainly a beautiful apartment, and somehow it feels more 'real' being in the centre of a Cambodian residential area.
The theme of the party was the Olympics. Felix, the birthday boy, attends an international school, as did all the children there. So the kids started off by drawing their flags, and had an Olympic parade around the pool, before undertaking six challenges to find the Olympic Flame, which had been stolen. We thought we'd take advantage of the situation to make a political statement with Nina's flag. Her grumpy face reflects our fears for the referendum perhaps? (or maybe she just didn't want to march around the pool, which was more likely)
Each night around the dinner table we choose our own "best thing" from the day. For me, it was seeing a hornbill in the tree. Jesse had said that there were hornbills there, as well as at Wat Phnom the other day, but despite scanning the trees in hope, I thought I was going to miss out. But suddenly, there he (?) was, in all his prehistoric glory.
