THINK TOGETHER.
If there was water that could make you live forever would you drink it?
READ TOGETHER
Proverbs 13:14. The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death.
The oldest city in America, St. Augustine, Florida, was founded by a Spanish explorer named Ponce de Leon. According to legend, he was searching for the fountain of life. Waters that, if you drank them, would make you live forever.
Of course there is no literal water that can make you live forever. And it is mostly a myth that Ponce de Leon was looking for magic water, but still today many people are trying to make it possible to live very long lives. Big companies like Google and major universities are trying to "solve aging" so that people can live to be 150 years old or older. But why?
When you are young you probably don't think too much about wanting to live forever. But as you get older the thought of dying can be scary, especially if you feel like you didn't live a very good life. Many people feel regrets about their life, or they simply want more time to enjoy things or do things.
Solomon says that the way to avoid death and live forever (fountain of life) is to listen to wise teaching. The word teaching is the Hebrew word, Torah, their word for the Bible. So Solomon is saying that if we listen to the Word of God we will live forever? Yes. But how is that possible?
Jesus is the living Word of God. He is the wisest teaching ever. Jesus said that he IS the fountain of life. When we receive his love and forgiveness it is like drinking from the fountain of life. When we trust in Jesus to save us we are turning from the snare of death and entering into everlasting life with God. Have you done that? Have you received Jesus? Will you live forever with him? No regrets? No fears?
Because of Jesus there truly is eternal life available for us.
With Jesus we will live forever without regret or fear.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Ask your children if they have received Jesus and his eternal life (like drinking water). Has his life entered into them by grace through faith alone?
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, you are the fountain of life. I want to receive you and live forever with you in your love and kindness. Amen.
