THINK TOGETHER.
Have you ever been really hungry?
READ TOGETHER
Proverbs 13:25. The righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite, but the belly of the wicked suffers want.
It sounds like Solomon is talking about food, but he is talking about much more than what we eat and what is in our bellies. He uses the word appetite. Do you know what your appetite is? When it comes to eating, your appetite determines how much you want to eat. We might say, "I don't have much of an appetite today." Or, "She has lost her appetite." If you have a big appetite you might be hungry all the time and want to keep eating. Do you have a good appetite for food? Do you like to eat?
Besides our appetite for food, we can have appetites for lots of other things too. An appetite is anything that you want really, really badly. Just like with food, if you are never full and you keep eating and eating, eventually you will get sick. You have to learn to be satisfied. You have to know when enough is enough. You have to choose to be content with what you already have eaten.
Solomon is telling us that the righteous person understands when enough is good enough. The righteous person is satisfied with what God gives them. They don't go out looking for more and more. But the wicked person is never full. The wicked person always wants more and more. More food? Yes. But also more money, or more stuff, or more attention, or more rest, or more credit. And when you always want more and more you are likely to do even more wicked things to get it, like cheat, or steal, or lie. Yikes.
When we have Jesus we always have enough. We have all that we need. We have all his love. His respect. His attention. His credit. Even his stuff because he shares all of creation with us. With Jesus our appetite is always satisfied. We are never "starving" because he is always with us giving us all we need.
Because of Jesus we have everything that we need.
With Jesus we are never starving and always full inside.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Eat a special meal together. Talk about how we all get hungry and thirsty for food and water. What else do we get hungry for? How does Jesus "feed us?"
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, give me an appetite for you and your love. Amen.
