This review was written by my husband, who is a Lutheran pastor.
The last fifty years has seen a great increase in the study of Puritanism and the
principal theologians of that 16th and 17th century movement. One of the most important
Puritan theologians was John Owen and a brief search of published material since the
'90's will show just how much academic interest in his work has grown. Crossway
Publishers is producing a 40-volume set of Owen's work, the most recent of which is
Volume 8, The Holy Spirit—The Comforter.
This volume contains three separate topics; "The Work of the Holy Spirit in Prayer",
"The Holy Spirit as Comforter", and "A Discourse on Spiritual Gifts." Time spent with
these writings is well worth the effort for anyone interested in thoughtful and in-depth
treatment of the work of the Holy Spirit, especially when paired with Volume 7.
I would warn the average reader that Owen is not the easiest read, despite some editing
to make it more accessible to modern readers. While I would like to see more people
engaged in Puritan studies, most of those interested in this series will be theologians or
church historians interested in 17th century English spirituality. That said, Crossway is
not slacking on the quality of books in this series as it should for a series which will rest
on library shelves and grace the offices of specialists for many years.
In a theological climate filled with all sorts of heterodoxy and specious argumentation, it
is a privilege to read a strong statement of Protestant orthodoxy.
VERDICT: 4 STARS, only because the treatment is too academic for most people.
