Ours is the only culture that admitted our sin and have attempted some type(s) of atonement and deep cultural/moral adjustments. It's those virtues we should be recognized for, not our sameness with the rest of the world. So. The goal must be something other than justice. I think the actual target is capitalism.
When I say 'ours' I am referring to the Anglosphere which includes the Brits who were as inspired by our declaration as the northern states that began outlawing slavery immediately after declaring our independence. Yes. The south and the planter class would not let the institution die as many of the founders thought it would and so they were left with attempts to limit its growth which culminated in a civil war (as you know) and years of southern anti Americanism in the form of segregation and Jim Crow. From the birth of our ideals, slavery was an anathema and it took us over two hundred years to partially live up to our ideals. And now a group of academic activists have so influenced the culture that we are actually going backwards.
