MASTERPIECE premiered a new adaptation of Henry Fielding's classic THE HISTORY TOM JONES, A FOUNDLING on Sunday night (the first episode repeats over the weekend – check our program guide for times). TOM JONES was a picaresque novel published in 1749 and is among the earliest English works to be classified as a novel. It has previously been adapted into a film and a TV miniseries and even a stage musical. And like any MASTERPIECE presentation the current series features faces you may know from other programs we've aired over the years. Let's see who is who, shall we?
To start, the two main characters of Tom Jones and Sophia Western are played by Solly McLeod and Sophie Wilde, respectively. Both young actors have yet to appear in anything else that PBS North Carolina has broadcast but they are at the start of their careers so I'm sure we'll see them again.
Shirley Henderson plays Aunt Western. Many people may recognize her as Moaning Myrtle from the Harry Potter film franchise but she's appeared as Hannah Davey in Jamaica Inn and as Marie Melmont in The Way We Live Now.
Alun Armstrong is Squire Western. The veteran actor has been in numerous series we've broadcast over the decades but you may have seen him as George Stott in Dark Angel, Clifford Bentley in Prime Suspect: Tennison, Brian Lane in New Tricks, Northumberland in The Hollow Crown, Monsieur Thenardier in Les Miserables In Concert: The 25th Anniversary, Flintwich in Little Dorrit, Bucket in Bleak House, Dan Peggoty in David Copperfield, Mr. Fleming in Oliver Twist or Henry Fox in Aristocrats.
Dean Lennox Kelly portrays Black George Seagrim. He's also played Meredith Rutter in Jamestown and Danny Rampton in Collision.
Tamzin Merchant, who plays Aunt Harriet, was Margot Durrell in My Family And Other Animals.
James Fleet is Squire Allworthy. While he may be best known for playing the dim-witted yet sweet Hugo Horton in The Vicar Of Dibley, he also portrayed Chris Lowe in Unforgotten, Hastings in The Hollow Crown, Lord Hawthorne in Indian Summers, Mr. Bennett in Death Comes To Pemberley and Frederick Dorrit in Little Dorrit
Janine Duvitski, who plays Mrs. Wilkins, should be immediately recognizable to Britcom fans as Jane Edwards in Waiting For God. She was also Pippa in One Foot In the Grave and Mrs. Meagles in Little Dorrit.
Felicity Montagu portrays Aunt Bridget. She's also been seen as Caroline Bosman in Doc Martin, Winnie Miles in The Tunnel and Prue in The Durrells In Corfu.
Julian Rhine-Tutt is Patrick Fitzpatrick. He's been Monks in Oliver Twist and Danny Glassman in Reckless: The Sequel.
These are just some of the actors in this wonderful MASTERPIECE presentation, specifically those that appeared in episode one. Others may crop up that you know as well in the coming weeks.
The MASTERPIECE miniseries TOM JONES continues Sunday night at 9 on PBS NC.
