A kind heart is a fountain of gladness making everything in its vicinity freshen into smiles.
Washington Irving
This last month has reminded me what our lives were like before the lockdowns, going up to London by train, travelling the underground and seeing the sights. The WHO has declared that Covid is now not a threat and in five years time it will probably be, for most, a distant memory. Also meeting up with friends enjoying strolling round beautiful gardens, all the while marvelling at natures bounty. I think it has been a particularly verdant Spring after the hot weather last year, when the lawns were already turning brown by this month. I love the running water in a couple of these photos and have been experimenting with the long exposure setting on my iPhone to get the blurred effect of the water. It's still a little hit and miss as to whether all the photo is blurred or not!
How extraordinary to have had a Platinum Jubilee, a State funeral and now a Coronation, all inside twelve months. At each occasion the armed services have done us proud, marching in a field of red tunics, each made by the same firm of tailors, out of the same cloth, some three hundred miles needed for the six thousand new uniforms! The shine of the cuirasses worn on the front of the cavalry, mirrored by the shine on their boots and their black horses. But by far the shine with most 'bling' came from the Gold state coach and the sparkling jewels of the crowns on the new King Charles III and his queen.
The importance of a band to keep all the army personnel moving at the same speed was vitally important during the procession, achieved by every band along the route playing the same music at the same time. This was something that had not been done before and I could only marvel at the hours of practice, usually in the very early hours of the morning that enabled this feat to be performed so perfectly. Musicians marching while playing are very skilled, but playing and riding a horse at the same time defies belief! The huge drum horses are steered by having reins attached to their rider's stirrups, as they need both hands for the drum sticks! When I visited London a week after the Coronation, I watched bands practising for the Trooping of the Colour which takes place next month. Another excuse for pageantry.
A band is not proud because it performs well; it performs well because it is proud!
