THINK TOGETHER.
Have you listened to any advice lately? What was it?
READ TOGETHER
Proverbs 8:1-3. 1Does not wisdom call? Does not understanding raise her voice? 2On the heights beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; 3beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud:
Sometimes Proverbs can be a little bit confusing because Solomon will talk about Wisdom as if it is a person, usually a woman. That's how Proverbs 8 starts out. Did you hear it? Wisdom is calling out like a person. Wisdom is raising HER voice and SHE is crying aloud.
Have you ever walked through a shopping mall or a market place? Sometimes there are people trying sell things in the center of the mall or at a marketplace stand. They walk up to you, approach you, talk to you and want to get you to come listen to them. Your parents may have experienced something like this when buying a car. Solomon turns both Wisdom and Folly (foolishness) into persuasive women in this book. Both women are constantly crying out to those who pass by. Both want you to follow them. Both want you to do what they say. Both want you to be their friend. Which will you listen to and follow?
What we can always be sure of is that Wisdom is never quiet. She is always talking. She is always crying out for you. She is always offering you God's way. Why? Because God is never quiet. God is always inviting you to follow him and to listen to him through the Bible and the Holy Spirit.
It's interesting that Solomon made Wisdom into a person, because Jesus is a person who IS wisdom. To listen to God's wisdom in the bible and by the Holy Spirit is to listen to Jesus. No Jesus, no wisdom. No Jesus means you're listening to Lady Folly and not Lady Wisdom.
Because of Jesus God's wisdom is knowable.
With Jesus we can always hear the wisdom of God.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Draw a picture with Lady Wisdom and Lady Folly. What is each of them saying? Include a speech bubbles for each one with what they might be saying.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, I want to listen to you and your love. Make me wise today as I listen. Amen.
