TLIC FAMILY: PROVERBS. DAY 66. MARCH 7: ASTRAY.

THINK TOGETHER.

Have you ever been convinced to do something that you knew was wrong?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 5:23. He dies for lack of discipline, and because of his great folly he is led astray.

Proverbs 5 ends on a very serious note. The person who won't listen or change their ways, will end up in a terrible place...maybe even in death.

Solomon isn't trying to scare his children, and he isn't trying to be dramatic. He's being a good father, warning his children about what happens when you are led astray down a path away from God and his loving ways. For example, if you turn astray to drugs or alcohol it might lead to death. If you turn astray to anger and fighting that path might lead to death. What other sins could lead to death?

Then there are those sins that lead us astray toward dying spiritually or relationally.  If you lie all the time, or are mean all the time, your friendships will die. If you play video games all the time and never talk to God or read your Bible, your trust in God will begin to die. How does God keep us from going astray? Discipline. God corrects us when we start to go astray on a path toward death. Here's how the book of Hebrews in the New Testament describes God's discipline in our lives.

Hebrews 12: 11. For the moment all discipline seems painful [not] pleasant, but it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Sometimes, because he loves us, God will let painful and unpleasant things happen to us so that we will obey him and change our choices. How can we avoid this discipline? By not going astray. Earlier in Hebrews 12 it tells us to look to Jesus. Keep your eyes on him. Follow his ways. Let him love you and let his love guide you. It will never, ever lead you astray.

Because of Jesus God's discipline will keep us from going astray.

With Jesus we can avoid going astray by keeping our eyes on him.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Blindfold mom or dad and see if they can be guided through the house to a destination using just verbal directions. Did they go astray? Why or why not? Jesus will never lead us astray.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, help me look at you so that I don't go astray. Amen.
