THINK TOGETHER
What have you been afraid of?
READ TOGETHER
God doesn't want us to be afraid. He wants us to trust him. Here's how Psalm 56 puts it:
Psalm 56:11. in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me?
But there are lots of things to be afraid of aren't there? What have you been afraid of? A person? A thing? A place? Sometimes we try to make people think that we are never afraid of anything. But the truth is that all of us are afraid sometimes. We're not always afraid that someone might hurt us, but we might be afraid that someone won't like us, or that we will be left out, or made fun of. Have you ever been afraid of these things? Have you ever tried to fit in with others?
So what do we need to remember when we are afraid, especially when we afraid of how others might hurt us or treat us? Well, in Psalm 56 King David also says this:
Psalm 56:9. This I know, that God is for me.
King David reminds us that God is for us. He didn't find courage from inside of himself. He found courage by trusting in God. He knew that God would never reject him, or leave him, or make fun of him. And he knew that no matter what happened to him, he would live forever with God.
One thousand years after King David, Jesus came to earth and called himself God. He taught us that we never have to be afraid because he is always with us and always for us. And we never have to be afraid because even if the worst things happen to us, we can know that we will live forever with God. How do we know this? Because Jesus already went through the worst thing, the scariest thing, when he died on the cross for us. And if he would do the scariest thing ever for us, won't he get us through our scary things too? Yes, he will.
Because of Jesus I know that God is with me now and forever.
With Jesus I never have to be afraid. But when I am, I can trust in God.

Make Psalm 56:3 a family memory verse: Psalm 56:3. When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. Practice saying it together each night before bedtime.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, when I am afraid I will trust in you. Amen.
