I remember seeing an old movie from the late fifties called, "The Long, Long Trailer." It was a story of a married couple who decided to travel across the country on their way to a new home. While they traveled, their home was going to be a camping trailer which they pulled with their car.
The wife thought it would be a good idea to save a rock from every place they visited. She planned to use the rocks in a flower garden when they arrived at their new home. But, she did not pick up small rocks. Each rock was large and heavy so the longer they traveled, the heavier the trailer became.
One day the road brought them to a very steep mountain. The husband was not concerned about the mountain because the car was built to easily handle the weight of the trailer. Up the mountain, they went. The car, straining to pull the trailer got slower and slower. Finally, it just stopped. The husband could not understand what was wrong with the car. That is when he found out about the rocks. Dozens of huge rocks! The couple had a long and loud discussion about the rocks as he dumped them off the side of the mountain.
Well, the movie was funny. The main characters were played by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez so you know it was good. However, the lesson of this story is that most of us are carrying unnecessary burdens. As children of God, we are designed to mount up with wings like eagles. Instead, we stumble along; loaded down with burdens we don't need to carry.
In the movie, the wife was carrying heavy rocks as mementos of their trip. For most of us, the burdens that hold us back are nothing but mementos of things that are best forgotten. If you will listen you can hear Jesus as He says, "Come to Me, all who labor and are heavily laden and I will give you rest." Dump all your unnecessary burdens, cast your cares on Jesus, and experience the peace and strength you were designed to have.
