TLIC FAMILY: PROVERBS. DAY 55. FEBRUARY 24: SPEECH.

THINK TOGETHER.

What do you talk about the most?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 4:24. Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you.

Yesterday we learned one of life's most important lessons – we must guard our hearts. And the way we guard our hearts is by continuing to trust in Jesus. Over the next few days we will see what happens when we guard our hearts. The mouth, the eyes, and the feet will follow.

What we say reveals what is inside of our hearts. Jesus taught us this same truth one thousand years after Solomon:

Luke 6:45. The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Good heart – good words. Bad heart – bad words.

Solomon first warns against crooked speech. Do you tell lies? Half-truths? Do you try to trick others with your words? Do you exaggerate? Then Solomon warns against devious talk. This describes many kids of bad speech, including telling jokes or stories that are unclean, using curse words, and even breaking promises. All of these kinds of bad speech show what is in our heart. They who what we care about the most.

When we focus on Jesus and how much he loves us then our hearts will be full of his love. And our words should show that to others. When we know that we are loved by God no matter what, then we know that we don't have to lie, or cover up in order to look good. We don't have to fit in by telling bad jokes or stories. Our words can start to sound like Jesus' words. Kind. Caring. Encouraging. True.

Because of Jesus we have God's love in our hearts.

With Jesus we can use encouraging words that reflect his love in our hearts.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Make Ephesians 4:29 one of your family memory verses.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, fill my heart with your love and let your love become the words I speak. Amen.
