Pat met Celeste when they both worked at Harrah's in South Lake Tahoe. He took her to Zephyr Cove, to an expensive fancy restaurant with a view. Pat had big hopes for the date since he had a bit of a crush on Celeste.
But Celeste flirted with the GQ waiter, a ski patrol type. She tried to get him to give her his phone number while Pat watched. The word rude comes to mind, since the waiter was not on the date and was not paying for Celeste's meal. Was she not interested in Pat? Was she trying to be a jerk? Was she showing off?
The waiter did not give out his number, and Pat saw no reason in prolonging the date. After dinner he took Celeste back to her place and decided the gentlemanly thing to do would be to walk her to the door. He turned off his truck and got the friend hug at the door. A light snow was falling for a magical background to a not-so-great night.
When Pat tried to start his truck, it wouldn't start. He wanted to get the hell out of there, so he pushed his truck around the corner, found a pay phone (it was the eighties) and called a buddy to come give him a jump. His buddy showed up, got his truck started, and Pat drove home from the most humiliating date of his life
