I was on board a PBY Catalina, looking down out of the bottom of the plane. Below us, I saw that Guadalcanal did not have anyone there--not yet occupied by the Japanese, so I grabbed a cardboard 5-4 counter and dropped it onto the island. Because the 5-4 was Marines, the island was now under American control.

I was in the central campus of a college in Rock Island. I was there because it was the last game ever Rock Island was going to play in football and I wanted to say hi to Hannah Ohlsen's grandfather and her boyfriend [her husband now in real life]. I was at an old train station entrance with a big crowd but I didn't see either guy so I asked someone and they said both were killed in the fourth quarter of the last game. I decided to leave and went up the stairs of Beardshear Hall, through the doors, but there was a forest of cameras on tripods that I had to weave through. I got thru successfully and went into the closest room and found the visiting football team getting into their pads and helmets.

I was on an overpass and it was sunny outside. It was cold because of a wind. I was trying to teach math to kids--not yet teenagers. It was frustrating because I could only explain things using Roman numerals and they did not understand. One boy was throwing a tantrum because he wrote iiiiii,000 for 6,000 rather than VI M. Another asked how you carried numbers and used "FOIL" and I just stared at him until he sat down. Then I watched cars on the road.
