What country did Big Bird visit in a 1983 SESAME STREET special?
In its fifty-plus years as a pop culture juggernaut, SESAME STREET has spawned everything from toys and albums to movies and specials. Often these specials were holiday related like ELMO SAVES CHRISTMAS. Sometimes they were pledge specials such as PUT DOWN THE DUCKIE. Sometimes they were just specials airing outside the normal kids block - even outside of PBS.
One such special aired in May 1983 in primetime. It followed beloved SESAME STREET regular Big Bird in a trip to a foreign country. (Big Bird would star in future specials set in other countries but this was the first.) Big Bird performer Caroll Spinney pitched the idea of the feathered Sesame Street resident traveling abroad after he appeared in a Bob Hope special set in the country in question.
Strangely enough, even though the special was produced by the Children's Television Workshop, it aired on NBC! It's possible the special eventually aired on PBS but I don't know that for certain. The special went on to win an Emmy Award.
So where was it? What foreign country did Big Bird visit in this NBC primetime SESAME STREET special?
Think about it and I'll post the correct answer later.
