THINK TOGETHER

Can you name the different people that teach you things? What kind of things do they teach you?

Jesus was a great teacher. He taught his disciples all about God, and the Bible, and life, and love, and himself.

But Jesus was much more than just a great teacher. He didn't just teach his disciples how to live, he lived FOR them. And he didn't just instruct us on how to obey God, he obeyed God in our place. Jesus isn't just our teacher – he's our SAVIOR. He lived perfectly in our place, and he died in our place on the cross.

After Jesus died on the cross he rose from the dead. Forty days later Jesus would go back up to heaven and send the Holy Spirit to be with us. But before Jesus went up into heaven he told his disciples what to do here on earth while he is gone. Listen to how Matthew's gospel records what Jesus said to his disciples:

Matthew 28:19-20. ¹⁹Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, ²⁰teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

"Go and make disciples."

Jesus made disciples and now he is asking us to do the same thing. But what is a disciple? The word disciple means student or learner. Jesus is asking us to become teachers just like he was, and he's asking us to teach his good news to others. God wants us to tell others about Jesus. And not just Jesus the great teacher, but Jesus the great SAVIOR.

Now think for a minute about the teachers in your life. Do they teach you something one time and then never talk about it again? Did you go to school this year for only one day? Or did you go for lots and lots of days? Do your mom and dad tell you things one time and you remember it forever, or do they have to repeat it over and over?

Of course the answer is that we learn things when we talk about them all the time, over and over.

And that's what God wants us to do with our friends and families. He wants us to teach each other about Jesus and about the good news of Jesus saving us from our sins. He wants us to help each other to learn how to love each other just like Jesus did. He wants us all to be students and teachers of the greatest subject ever – Jesus!

Because of Jesus we are learning how God wants us to live and love others.

With Jesus we can teach other about him.
