Today I am promoting my children's book. I am hoping to persuade you to buy my book. The title isn't one you should Google, as Woody always beats it to the top of the search engine even though I wrote Woedy Bear in 1984. Look for my name instead. I am HermioneLaake. I wrote Woedy Bear aged 18 years. I queried it for a few years, got quite a few rejection slips and decided to self-publish on Kindle in 2013. That was the year I was nominated for a prize for writing. I was also nominated the following year. I didn't win either prize. But I kept on writing. I didn't write Woedy Bear for those agents, I wrote it for you and your children.
Magical Reading
Reading is a wonderful way to teach without trying. Children are amazing. I should know because I read children's books to five of my own every day for 20 years. You read them a new word and they remember it. It's that simple. It's like some kind of magic trick.
Habits
I have been writing every day for the past 38 years. I am also an editor. I have been reading submissions with sole authority for four categories for over a year now. Not only that, I've been attending workshops and writers' events and learning my craft from good writers. I keep volunteering to help writers. I am helping readers too, by selecting quality writing and by volunteering as an editor.
Classic Books for Children
There are many writers like me. Writers who have written good books and their books weren't recognised until they passed away. Some of my favourite books are Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, Anna Sewell's Black Beauty, Gene Zion's, Harry the Dirty Dog, Anne Fine's It's Only a Show, Madonna's Mr Peabody's Apples. All these books have something in common. They are old-fashioned stories, I suppose. But I think that if you remember them and you enjoyed them, you might enjoy my book too.
The Day I looked up from my Swing and saw my bear, Woedy Bear, on the next-door-neighbour's washing line
You see, Woedy Bear is all about something that happened to me. Not only that, it's all about love. It is all about the power of love. The power of a whole group of birds to help themselves by helping out a little girl. The subtle, unstated message is that we are all interconnected. We all matter, and we can all make a difference if only we are brave enough to help oneanother.
Make time for your children
The main premise of Woedy Bear is rather like the one I would give this blog. You matter, you can change, you can begin a new habit like reading to your child every day, or walking with your child every day, or cycling with your child, or, well there are so many things you can do, because you matter, dear reader. Why don't you give Woedy Bear a read and start the habit of a lifetime?
