We meet a deep synthesis between the esoteric Wisdom of the migratory streams that originated on ancient Atlantis – the Northern Arthurian stream, & Southern Parzival stream, when we retrieve the essence of the Hibernian Mysteries. This middle pillar - a precursor to Manicheism, founded by the “Divine Manu”, created an occult Mystery School located in the region of modern Ireland. The Divine Hierarchies work thru Manu, the founder of the central Sun mysteries on Atlantis - & he acts as a mediator between human & divine beings - guiding the evolution of humanity since before the flood, with the task of finding the way between Good & Evil. This aspect was highly active in the soul configuration of the peoples of Northern Europe who were associated with the Hibernian Mysteries - For in them was cultivated a deepening of thinking & feeling with respect to the Spirit behind Nature, & also a powerful development of the individual human “I”.
“Only towards the end of the Atlantean period, in the region of modern Ireland, does the human being begin to manifest “I” consciousness, and become able to think clearly and logically“ ~Rudolf Steiner, GA 94, Cosmogony This shift in human consciousness was realized in the Hibernian Mysteries when the candidate was led to a practical experience of the working of supersensible forces in their own soul – as well as in the natural world - And when these 2 polar forces were balanced within them – they were then led to a transcendent 3rd force - a prophetic contemplation of the future Christ as the Cosmic Archetype of every individual human “I” - It was this fostering in the Hibernian Mysteries that led, in time, to the birth of an altogether new soul force – that of conscience! The reason why this principle of conscience could first be born in Hibernia, apart from the unique qualities of their healing Druidic Mysteries, was also due to the profound occult-geography & Spirit of Place - for Ireland holds an earthly reflection of the original ‘Paradise’ - before the adversarial forces of Lucifer entered in. Because of this, since ancient times, it has been possible on the island of Hibernia to attain a high degree of purity in the astral body. Over the course of many centuries, at this sacred vortex, in an occult-geographical sense, Ireland has played the part of an awakener of the conscience of humanity. For from an esoteric standpoint the arising of conscience calls forth within the human being a dim memory of our paradisal condition before the Fall - & at the same time enables us to be inwardly aware of the soul-voice of conscience which can be described as a kind of “Inner Ireland” — where Divine forces untouched by anything earthly is preserved.
The Initiates of the Hibernian Mysteries were able to protect the ancient wisdom of the Sun mysteries from Atlantis - retaining a high degree of clairvoyance - giving them practical insights into Cosmic & human existence - allowing them to approach the secrets of the ‘Cosmic Word – the Logos’- long after the other ancient Mystery schools fell into corruption.
As part of the initiatory rites of the Hibernian Mysteries, the candidate was led to have an inner experience of merging with 2 symbolic effigies holding the opposite polar energies of North (male) & South (female) - In order that the Future of the Cosmos may be joined to the Past – a mystic marriage between SCIENCE & ART where the human being holds the middle pillar of SPIRIT – becoming a bridge between the Past & the Future. In this way the initiate learned to expand their soul Spiritually - on the one side into the Cosmos - & on the other, to penetrate deeply into a region of their inner being.
In Ireland - The Spirit of Place who was inspiring this Initiation, holding the purity of the Mystery teachings in respect to the process of human evolution, created for the pupil of the Hibernian Mysteries, a vision of the Christ-Sun before the incarnation. And so, the impressions received by them thru their initiation on the Emerald Isle, were those of an innate, Nature-born morality. It gave the initiate a vista of their pre-earthly unborness, as well as the post-earthly life after death. At the same time, it gave them a vista of the Cosmic life with which the human being is interwoven - & out of which we are born in the course of the ages.
& so it was, that the pupil of the Hibernian Mysteries learned to know the Microcosm, as themself - a being of Spirit, soul & body in relation to the Macrocosm. But they also learned to know how the Macrocosm itself evolves - how it arises, undergoes metamorphoses & ultimately passes away, dying, only to be born anew.
The Hibernian Mysteries were at their prime in the eras preceding the Mystery of Golgotha, which occured during the Greco-Roman epoch. But the essential feature of their initiation made them disciples to the Christ, which was for them, of the Future. And when the image of Christ was shown to them, the purpose was to bring home the fact that the whole course of Earthly evolution, as part of cosmic existence, hinges on the Event of Golgotha - which at that time still lay in the future.
& so it was that on the Emerald Isle - which later endured so many trials, there was a ‘Christian’ Mystery School before there were Christians —a Center where the Spiritual gaze of human beings living before the incarnation of Christ, was directed in the right & true way towards this ‘Turning Point of Time’.
And when eventually that Mystery deed of Christ was actually happening - when those extraordinary occurrences took place in Palestine on the ‘Hill of the Skull’ — at that very moment in time - solemn Festivals were celebrated within the Hibernian Mysteries themselves.
Yes, we can remember that what was actually happening in Palestine was revealed to them on the island of Hibernia thru pictures woven into the ethers - The initiates were able to experience in the Spirit what was being inscribed into the aura of the Earth thru Christ’s deed. Subsequently - from then on, into our time now – the impulses received by these initiates went out from Hibernia into the rest of the civilized world.
Today, we can look back at these truths, & find our gaze directed again to the Hibernian Mysteries which speak to us of a time perhaps lived thru in a previous incarnation – when we, in our connection to Spirit knew, that the Christ is present as Lord of the Elements – the Redeeming meaning of the Earth.
