In His explanation of the Parable of the Wheat and Tares, Jesus said that the righteous will "shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father" (Matthew 13:43) at the time of the harvest.
Alma used the same imagery as he described the resurrection to his son Corianton:
Then shall the righteous shine forth in the kingdom of God.
Alma 40:25
While that event is still in the future, the Savior has called upon His disciples to begin to exemplify it today. "Let your light so shine before this people," He said, "that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven" (3 Nephi 12:16, Matthew 5:16). And in an 1838 revelation to Joseph Smith, immediately after specifying the name of His church, He gave the following instruction:
Arise and shine forth, that thy light may be a standard for the nations.
Doctrine and Covenants 115:5 (compare Isaiah 60:1-3)
We "shine forth" when we joyfully live according to true principles. We "shine forth" when we testify boldly of things we know to be true. We also "shine forth" when we serve others, comforting them and bringing happiness into their lives.
Today, I will "arise and shine forth." I will find ways to share God's light with the people around me, helping them to draw closer to Him.
