Here is that list of admonitions, from Alma 38:10-14: - "I would that ye would be diligent and temperate in all things."
- "See that ye are not lifted up unto pride."
- "See that ye do not boast in your own wisdom, nor of your much strength."
- "Use boldness, but not overbearance."
- "See that ye bridle all your passions, that ye may be filled with love."
- "See that ye refrain from idleness."
- "Do not pray as the Zoramites do, for ye have seen that they pray to be heard of men, and to be praised for their wisdom."
- "Acknowledge your unworthiness before God at all times."
The common denominator is self-management. Alma is urging his son to be more self-aware, to recognize when he is motivated by pride, and to restrain himself and channel his energy in more positive directions. Don't be overbearing. Don't boast. Don't let your passions run wild. Don't do things because you want to be praised. Instead, be diligent and temperate. I had a career conversation the other day with a long-time mentor. As I described to him some of the advantages of a potential change of role, he asked, "Is this Paul talking, or is this Paul's ego?" It was a great reminder to strive for that kind of self-awareness Alma is advocating here. Do you want this because it is a meaningful way to contribute, or do you want this because you think other people will admire you for it? The first is substantial; the second is ephemeral. Be careful not to substitute other people's perceptions, or worse yet, your perception of their perceptions, for reality. Today, I will follow Alma's admonitions. I will strive for self-awareness. I will strive to set aside my ego. I will bridle my passions, humble myself, and engage in truly important activities. | | | |
