The portmanteau genre is the current big thing combining the two popular genres of Romance and Fantasy. That's not a new combination but it is a big thing and the biggest thing in Romantasy in 2023 was Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros about people who ride dragons. I left the category off the last graph because it distorted the axis. Here is the graph with fewer categories (Romance, Fantasy and their bouncing baby Romantasy) plus only the top 10 so that we aren't comparing satsumas with tangerines. Just under 70% of the vote went to Fourth Wing, which is massive. The next highest proportion in any category at any time was I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy in 2022 Memoir Autobiography with 54% of the vote. Here's a similar graph but this time it is raw votes but showing aggregating by the MAXIMUM value across years in a bunch of categories. | | | | You can also reply to this email to leave a comment. | | | | |
