Greetings LAMBs, you have been recruited by the LAMBcast to listen to this week's episode, after you do, the Kodan Armada will be but a trifle for you to dispense with, it's Movie of the Month time. The July MOTM was championed by Matthew Simpson of the Awesome Friday Podcast, and he hosts a crew of fellow recruits as we discuss the 1984 charmer "The Last Starfighter".
We share our histories with the movie and discuss in detail the elements that make the film a treasure for the nostalgia inclined, and fun for those who were not around when it first hit the screen. Todd Liebenow, Matthew and Richard were all present in 1984, Tony Coogan only recently caught up with the film. The groundbreaking but still primitive digital effects are a subject of scrutiny, but so are a couple of story elements that sometimes get ignored. Todd correctly points out that this is also a "teen" movie in the middle of the decade for teen movies. Matthew checks in with an observation about community that spurred a lot of discussion, and Tony provides some videogame context for those gamers out there on the prowl to become star fighters themselves.
Acting legends Dan O'Herlihy and Robert Preston get a lot of love for their essential contributions to the film. It appears that Catherine Mary Stewart may have had something to do with the appeal of this film to teen age boys in the 80s.
So put on your uniform, pin on your translator button, and drop another quarter in the slot for a rousing episode of the Lambcast.
