Mariners See Mighty Wonders "Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters, They see the works of the Lord, And His wonders in the deep. For He commands and raises the stormy wind, Which lifts up the waves o…
They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man,
And are at their wits' end.
Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He brings them out of their distresses.
He calms the storm,
So that its waves are still.
Then they are glad because they are quiet;
So He guides them to their desired haven.
Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
Let them exalt Him also in the assembly of the people,
And praise Him in the company of the elders," Psalm 107:23-32 NKJV.
The storms of life sometime come upon us unexpectedly or because of our bad choices or because of the behaviors of others, to name a few. However, Psalm 107 assures us, God, no matter what the circumstances or storms are, He is there to solve the problem.
A long time ago I went sailing on a family member's catamaran on the Long Island Sound. It was a beautiful, still, sunny day. There was not much breeze for sailing. However slow we sailed it was just nice to be on the water. It took us about two hours to go a few nautical miles. Suddenly, we saw a very tiny cloud forming towards the west of us. As we watched the cloud, we began to notice it was taking an ominous turn to storm status. This storm cloud was heading straight towards us. We discussed the situation and decided to head back to land. Slowly we turned the boat about and headed for the harbor. As we headed towards the harbor we realized we would not out run the storm. The storm hit us with a furious velocity. The wind increased dramatically. The sea became a small boat sailors nightmare. The rain started to pelt us and it thundered and lightning was in the air. Our mast on the catamaran was an aluminum pole of about fifteen feet. As the lightening flashed across the sky, my brother-in-law and I became anxious over the vibrating mast being charged with static electricity. We were frightened by the prospect of the mast becoming a lightening rod. As we prayed silently to reach the harbor the sail filled with a hard blowing wind. We were whisked along the water at an incredible speed. With expert hands, my brother-in-law sailed the boat to the harbor and quickly we beached the boat, jumped off for safety, and ran for cover. We were very thankful to be on the beach in safety. Looking back all I can say is "And He brings them out of their distresses!"
This was a powerful lesson to learn at an early age, you can be sailing along the road of life smoothly, when wham, here comes a storm. The best answer to the storm is to follow the advice of Psalm 107.
"Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He brings them out of their distresses."
For me, God has been faithful to every call for His help. Sometimes you are brought out of the storm quickly and sometimes slowly. If you are in a storm and being tossed about violently by it, in the name of Jesus, call out for His help!
"This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek," Hebrews 6:19-20 NKJV.
May the hymn "My Anchor Holds" by Rv William Clark Martin teach you to call on the name of Jesus for all your needs.
