A fruity apocalyptic rom-com from the razor-sharp pen of Fringe First winner David Finnigan. Girl meets boy. Girl hates boy. Girl f*cks boy 44 times. The world collapses. Some seriously naughty actors go down on their microphones, mangos and melons in this slippery, subversive take on a classic radio play, a clever and uproarious response to humanity's decision to go harder, faster, FASTER! towards the end of the world.
Bec Massey of Club House Productions found some time before their Edinburgh Festival Fringe run to chat with Corr Blimey about their apocalyptic and fruity show!
Would you mind giving us a brief insight into what your show is?
Long story short, it's your classic apocalyptic rom-com: girl meets boy, girl hates boy, girl f**ks boy 44 times, and the world collapses.
Life blogger and wannabe academic Celina Valderrama has to review a new sex book 'The 44 Sex Acts That Will Change Your Life'. BUT the only partner she can find is her nemesis, brooding animal activist Alab Delusa.
In the space of seven days, these sworn enemies have to journey through the wild landscapes of sex at breakneck speed: from BDSM to polyamory, from roleplay to exhibitionism. Look out!
Tell us about the creative team and the process involved?
I play Malaine Guttierez, sex coach, influencer and author of "The 44 Sex Acts That Will Change Your Life". It's. Malaine's a superhot crackpot and an absolute depraved delight to play.
The team are a collection of friends chosen because they are the naughtiest and most attractive people in Sydney (so that's v. naughty and v. attractive). We met working on First Winner David Finnigan's first play, Kill Climate Deniers, and have joyously skidded down slope to slippery theatrical slope together since.
How does it feel coming to the Fringe?
We've never been so it's super exciting! Audiences have loved 44 Sex Acts all over Australia so we hope Edinburgh audiences will enjoy watching us get busy on microphones and fruit in this slippery and subversive take on a classic radio play.
There are over 3,000 shows at the Fringe. So, what sets your show apart?
Live sex acts performed on fruit.
Is there anything specific you're hoping the audience will take away?
Reviewers (Time Out 4****) have said things like "deceptively clever script" and "brilliantly funny dialogue, sex positive, egalitarian, patriarchy-smashing, late-stage capitalism obliterating, empathic, relatable, and profound." But we just want you to laugh your ass off for 70 minutes.
You might, if you're paying attention, finally understand what a ruined orgasm is.
Your ideal audience is in attendance, who's watching? Or more importantly – who isn't there…
Obvs audiences need to be 15+ because of sexy times. But it's a slutty show that straddles high and low culture so we want everyone to come. Come multiple times! Multiple times with multiple partners.
[Dress code: "bring back the wild" = animal print on animal print]
It's an intense month, so where you're able, how do you plan to relax, and are there any other shows you intend to see or want to recommend?
Relax? No. We want to see all the fabulous things that are on from all over the world. Especially including our clever, clever friends Pony Cam, who are bringing their smash hit Burnout Paradise to the Fringe.
In your ideal world, how can we improve the Fringe, of performance, and the industry?
I'll let you know afterwards. So far so great!
