She is the daughter of Brahma Rishi Kusdhvaja; she is born as a fruit of bhakti and tapas. There is belief that goddess Padmavathi is actually Vedavati in Tretayug. In Kaliyug goddess Padmavathi married to Lord Venkasteshwara.
The child grew up to a beautiful girl devoting herself to Lord Vishnu, both Devas and Demons were eager to marry her but she was bent on Vishnu to accept her as his wife. She went to Pushkara forest to meditate; she undertook severe penance for Vishnu to be her husband.
After rigourous tapas in forest she heard a voice from heavens "Vedavati you have to be reborn and Lord Vishnu would also be reborn and become your husband." But that news did not hamper her tapas.
It so happened that Ravana the evil ruler of Lanka, passed by in his Pushpaka Vimana, he saw a beautiful maiden absorbed in meditation, at once he came down and addressed her "My beautiful lady, what is young girl like you doing in this forest? Come with me and be my queen, I will give you all the riches of the world!" He touches her hair, being very indignant at this she declares that she would enter the fire and die before his eyes.
Before doing so she said "Since I have been molested in the forest by thee, who art wicked hearted, I shall be born again for thy destruction, for a man of evil design cannot be slain by a woman; and the merit of my austerity would be lost if I were to launch a curse against you.
But I have performed or bestowed or sacrifice aught, may I be born a virtuous daughter – not produced from the womb of righteous man." And she entered the fire and she was engulfed in the flames of fire.
In next birth, she was reborn as the daughter of Ravana, she was than been abandoned in the fields and found by King Janaka who named her as SITA.
