| camestrosfelapton Nov 26 | When the opening credits of a new Doctor Who episode include "Pat Mills and Dave Gbbons" you know somebody is mining the deepest rich seams of British pop-culture science-fiction. I really wasn't sure when or even if this new special was going to stream in Australia. Everything said it would be on Disney+ (breaking the hearts of all those Australians who had loyal followed the Doctor's adventures since 1965 on the public broadcaster ABC)...except the Disney+ app itself. The other day if you scrolled down a search of "Doctor Who", past Doctor Strange and Doogie Howser MD eventually you'd find a link to the episode but no indication of time. Luckily I'm an early riser, so at 5:30 am I tried again and there the episode was on my watchlist, ready to go. I'll write a longer review later, after a rewatch. In the meantime here is my spoiler free impression: - Very corny, as in very, very corny but Davis knows that just being a little bit corny is a worse mistake than laying it all on with a shovel. It keeps going and embraces how silly it is.
- Tennant and Tate are as magnificent as ever. They love what they are doing and Donna Noble remains the one best Doctor Who companion there ever was.
- Not a classic episode and in many ways not that different tonally from the Chibnall era, it's just that the jokes are funnier and overall, just done better - see my first point.
- It's just fun throughout.
More, after a rewatch. | | | | You can also reply to this email to leave a comment. | | | | |
