| jculler1972 Oct 12 | These thoughts are taken directly from a book I recently reviewed, You Are a Theologian by Jen Wilkin & J. T. English — Book Review. What is theology? Words about God. Who does theology? Everybody Why does theology matter? Because living well matters. Theology helps us to live life well. How do we do theology? - Theology must be biblical. The purpose of Christian theology is to understand the revelation of God contained in the Scripture. Theology that is not based on Scripture ceases to be Christian.
- Theology must be prayerful. The task of theology is done best when we ask God, through the Holy Spirit, to prepare our hearts and minds to understand Him rightly. Theology without prayer is just an intellectual exercise.
- Theology must be worshipful. It is loving God with our minds. It is meant to lead us into a greater worship of God, as we gain more knowledge about God. Doctrine and doxology fuel one another.
- Theology is meant to be done in community, both our contemporary community and the historic church. There is no such thing as a lone-ranger theologian. Theology should have a historical mindset, not giving tradition the same level of authority as Scripture but allowing it to help us see Scripture through the lenses of church history.
