Who played Cardinal Fang in the classic Spanish Inquisition sketch on MONTY PYTHON'S FLYING CIRCUS?
I could ask questions about MONTY PYTHON every Wednesday but I think it's best to change it up and keep things fresh, you know? Still, it was 54 years ago this month that the groundbreaking sketch comedy series debuted on BBC1 and that seemed a decent excuse to ask another one.
I think it's safe to say that while the influential troupe gave us innumerable sketches that were hilarious, there are a handful or so that may be considered classic in the sense of they are well known and immediately recognizable as Python originals. The Lumberjack Song, Dead Parrot, Cheese Shoppe, Ministry of Silly Walks, Nudge Nudge and Spam spring to mind. And, of course, the Spanish Inquisition.
The Spanish Inquisition sketch begins with Carol Cleveland crocheting and Graham Chapman coming in to deliver the line "One on't cross beams gone owt askew on treddle" in a thick accent, causing Cleveland's character to inquire what he's saying, eventually leading to Chapman to bemoan, "I didn't expect a kind of Spanish Inquisition." And with a jarring musical sting, the Spanish Inquisition enter and hilarity ensues. Three Inquisitors are present – Cardinal Ximinez, Cardinal Biggles and Cardinal Fang. Ximinez is the leader and Biggles appears to be second-in-command. Cardinal Fang reads the charges ("You are hereby charged that on diverse dates did commit heresy against the Holy Church.")
I'll acknowledge that it was one of the Pythons and not a rare guest star or anything like that. But who was it? Which member of the Monty Python troupe played Cardinal Fang in the classic Spanish Inquisition sketch on MONTY PYTHON'S FLYING CIRCUS?
Think about it and I'll post the correct answer later.
