THINK TOGETHER.
Do you have any trophies or awards? What for?

Proverbs 25:27. It is not good to eat much honey, nor is it glorious to seek one's own glory.
In the Old Testament the word glory comes from the word for weight or heaviness. The idea is that heavy things are worth more than light things (or are they). Heavy swords were better than light swords. Heavy stones are better than light stones. Everyone wants glory. We all want to know that we are worth something. That we are important and that we are loved. But when we try too hard to get glory it becomes something that hurts us instead of helps us. Like eating too much honey. A little honey is sweet and tasty. Too much honey makes you sick.
So in what ways do you seek your own glory? When a child is young they show off in front of everyone. Watch this. Watch this. Watch this. As you get older maybe you try to prove how good you are at a sport or how smart you are in school.
Remember, glory is like honey. A little bit is good. And where does honey come from? From bees. So we don't get honey from ourselves do we? Glory is the same. You can't give yourself glory and you shouldn't want too much glory. If someone else honors you with a trophy, or a certificate, or a high five that's great. That's a little bit of honey. But as soon as we start wanting more and more glory. When we start showing off or being selfish to get more glory, then we have crossed over into foolish sin.
Jesus said the same thing as Solomon when he was alive. He yelled at the religious leaders for seeking glory from others instead of seeking the glory of God (John 5:44). The Apostle Paul said the same thing too. He said that we should do everything to the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31). Why should we never seek more glory? Because like too much honey it will make us sick – self-centered and arrogant. What should we do instead? Seek the glory of God and then let him honor you either today or one day in Heaven.
Because of Jesus we will be glorified and honored by God.
With Jesus we don't have to seek our own glory.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Look at any awards your kids have. Talk about how glory comes from outside of us, not from ourselves. How can we glorify God when we get awards?
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, I get all my glory from you, help me give you the glory you deserve. Amen.
