| James Callahan Oct 28 | One apple, carefully chosen, no grapes but two single bananas chosen from others' bunches, one ripe and ready to eat, maybe half of it cut-up over cereal in the morning, the other banana is green - at least two days from ripeness; no bread because the loafs are too big, too wasteful, but one kaiser roll, chosen carefully, will do, and then to the meat counter for two chicken breasts, a pint of skim milk is next, a bag of frozen green peas is good for two meals at least and vanilla flavored yogurt that will be dessert; all in a cart pushed by a woman alone, her fingers have rings on them, gifts from someone, she wears make-up and her hair has been done; she still cares out of pride because that was how she was raised, how she lived, and now she's in front of me in line and I'm sad because she seems sad, or at least her groceries do. | | | | You can also reply to this email to leave a comment. | | | | |
