It is the school holidays. One might think that this is the best time for a teacher, however, I find that routine makes running in the morning easier. When I have no set timetable for my day I find that motivation is much harder to come by. That being said, I am taking advantage the time where I can. This week it has absolutely sluiced it down with rain so I took today's clear weather as an opportunity to run 10K, and I did it well, for a creaky, middle aged fellow.
I no longer run with Barkley, my border collie, and as a result I am getting faster. With Barkley I was always stopping and starting whereas solo running allows me to build up a cadence that is not only faster, but I am also getting faster on the hardest parts of the trails near me and the uphills. Today I broke the hour barrier for 10K and I had plenty left in the tank. Previously I managed to break eight minute miles when running 10K on the roads, so I clearly have loads of capacity to exploit. My fastest mile today was 9:18 and my total distance for the hour was 6.2 miles. Next stop: nine minute miles.
