TLIC FAMILY: PROVERBS. DAY 1. JANUARY 1: PROVERBS.

THINK TOGETHER.

What is a proverb? Do you know any proverbs? (Don't count your chickens before their hatched. Actions speak louder than words. Better late than never.)

READ TOGETHER.

Proverbs 1:1. The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:

This is how the book of Proverbs begins. Can you find Proverbs in your Bible? Flip through the pages. What do you see?

You see lots and lots of sayings. That's what proverbs are. They are little sayings that have big meanings. King Solomon was a king of Israel that was blessed by God with great wisdom. But Solomon didn't try to keep his wisdom to himself; he wanted to share it with his kids and with his nation, and with us. So Solomon wrote hundreds and hundreds of proverbs and he collected hundreds more from other countries. Why? So that we can all be wise.

In this family devotion we will look at a proverb each day. But before we begin here's a couple things you need to know:

1. Proverbs are short, so they don't tell us everything we need to know about something. They just tell us a little bit.

2. Proverbs aren't promises. They tell us how life usually works, but not always. Why not? Because we live in a world full of sin, and that sin often makes things go a different way than God intended.

3. Proverbs point to Jesus. All of God's wisdom put together looks like Jesus. Jesus is not only the wisest person ever, he IS wisdom. That means that to be wise will be to live like Jesus.

Because of Jesus you can know how to be wise.

With Jesus you can be wise.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Try to think of some more proverbs that you know. Or maybe try to come up with your own original proverb.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, you don't just tell me what to do so I never have to think; instead you teach us to be wise. Thank you for these proverbs that can help me wise like you. Amen.
