I do it because I can, I can because I want to, I want to because you said I couldn't!

Our younger daughter has been home for half-term and shortly before she arrived, a large heavy box was delivered to our door, containing a number of kilo weights. I'm not into exercising with weights, although my yoga teacher advocates the use of tins of tomatoes or baked beans to strengthen my arms! My normal exercise is much more gentle, so I was happy to accompany my daughter swimming for the first time this Summer.
The latest news is that perhaps we are going to go back to some of our imperial measurements. Not being a good mathematician, I'm not sure how I feel about this, as multiplying some of the old units is much more complicated than the metric system, twelve inches to a foot, three feet to a yard and one thousand seven hundred and sixty yards to a mile! It doesn't trip off the tongue quite as easily. Saying a baby weighs three and a half kilos, means nothing to me. A baby that weighs eight pounds means so much more. Also watching the Derby the other day, knowing that the winner had hit the front with two furlongs to run, was easy to understand!
The owl is the wisest of all birds because the more it sees, the less it talks.

How excited I was the other day walking the dogs, as a Barn Owl suddenly appeared and flew along side me as I walked along the lane. I know that they do fly during the day but thought it was more towards dusk, as they look for their usual prey of voles, mice and shrews. It's for that reason that they are encouraged on farms, helping to keep down the rodent population. They are protected and people put up special boxes as sadly many of their nesting sites are being removed. I wonder if he is nesting in the oak tree at the top of the drive!
