Last Tuesday a group of 18 researchers met at the Outdoor Activity Centre in Sheffield for a day on teambuilding/leading. This was part of The Researcher as Manager programme that we provide and covered two of the modules.
Why Teambuilding/leading?
Teambuilding/leading activities can help participants to:
Explore how they work together to achieve tasks
Develop their strengths and become aware of areas for development
Work collaboratively rather than in competition
Practice and observe styles of leadership
Reflect on their preferences and that of others in team roles
Discuss how teams develop and how leadership styles can support this
The Venue
Having a venue that is offsite and away from the bustle of everyday life provides the opportunity for attendees to leave all their troubles behind and focus on taking part in the activities. The OAC is in the middle of the countryside and very peaceful.
Communication
The weather was not off to a good start with it raining early on. I contacted all attendees to confirm the event was still on as we had some alternative indoor activities. Attendees also had my mobile in case of query. It is useful to make sure you have contact details if you are going to be offsite and that people know how to get in touch with you.
Always have a Plan B
As with any training event having alternatives available ensures the day runs smoothly. Fortunately, the sun came out and we could use the outdoor equipment so we did not need the indoor ones I had in reserve. In addition, I had extra activities available in case we had any spare time as well as information on similar topics that attendees might want to explore.
Models/Theories
I used some appropriate models and theories, which the session then explored through discussion and activities. Some I included were:
Teambuilding/leading days are well known for their fun outdoor activities. These need to be chosen to support the learning outcomes. However, there are other considerations:
The capabilities of the group and any health considerations – some may prefer to act as observers rather than take part if they are not comfortable with the activities.
Health and Safety – make sure a risk assessment has been carried out. Advise participants beforehand if they need to wear particular clothing or bring anything with them. At the start of the session provide a talk on Health and Safety to the group so they are aware of expected behaviour and any rules.
Have fun
Providing the space and time for participants to relax and get to know each other will help them develop as a group and be more likely to participate in the discussions and activities. Start the day of in a low-key way with easy exercises to build group cohesion and confidence. The more challenging tasks can then be introduced. Having fun is important but also allow plenty of time for discussion and reflection afterwards to help internalise the learning.
If your research group is interested in running an away day with some teambuilding included then please contact me if you need any advice or ideas.
